When are taxes due?
VEHICLES:
Vehicles taxes are due by the end of the month in which the vehicle tag expires. When you purchase a vehicle from a dealer, the dealer is authorized to secure your tag on your behalf. The dealership provides the purchase information to the SC Department of Motor Vehicles. Then, SCDMV will send the purchase information to the County who issues you a bill with a grace period of 120 days after your purchase.
If you purchase a vehicle from an individual, you are required to visit the Dorchester County Auditor’s Office with a copy of your bill of sale or title and proof of insurance. The Auditor will create you a tax bill and you may pay the property taxes and registration fees immediately with the Treasure’s Office.
WATERCRAFT:
Watercraft follow the same rules except the SC Department of Natural Resources is the agency who assists with titling and registering your boat.
REAL PROPERTY:
Real property taxes and personal property taxes are due without penalty by January 15. Late penalties are applied by statute (or the next business day):
- After January 15 an additional 3% penalty is applied.
- After February 2 an additional 7% penalty is applied.
- After March 16 an additional 5% penalty is applied. All payments after March 16, must be paid in the Delinquent Tax Office, 201 Johnston Street, St George, SC 29477.
